Cotton Research Verification Sustainability Program Weekly Update - June 24, 2022

by Joe McAlee, Cotton Verification Program Coordinator - June 24, 2022

Arkansas Row Crop Verification Program | University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture | In partnership with the Arkansas Commodity BoardsThis week we have been drying out quickly, as very high temperatures are sucking the moisture out of the ground. With only slight rain chances forecasted, many farmers across the state have been laying poly pipe to prepare, and some are starting to turn on pumps. It is essential to keep track of plant growth and see how much stress the plant is enduring. If a field is not putting on nodes as it should due to lack of water, yield will take a hit. We want to ensure that we are adding nodes in a timely manner to put us at around 9-10 nodes above our first flower to prevent an early cut out. Square retention is also essential to keep an eye on. If insect pests or other stress factors hit, fruit shed could happen quickly.
